An unusual cause of bilateral scrotal abscess in a preterm infant: Candida albicans BJID
Cetinkaya,Merih; Buyukkale,Gokhan; Payasli,Muge; Ozbek,Sibel; Kavuncuoglu,Sultan.
Acute scrotal abscess is a rare condition in neonates. Most of these abscesses were reported to be unilateral and caused by Staphylococcus and Salmonella spp. Herein, we report a bilateral scrotal abscess in a preterm infant and Candida albicans was isolated from the scrotal fluid culture. To our knowledge, this is the first bilateral scrotal abscess in a preterm infant caused by C. albicans. Therefore, this organism must be suspected in differential diagnosis of acute scrotal abscess in neonates, especially in preterm infants.

Turel,Ozden; Kavuncuoglu,Sultan; Hosaf,Emine; Ozbek,Sibel; Aldemir,Esin; Uygur,Turkan; Hatipoglu,Nevin; Siraneci,Rengin.
OBJECTIVE: We report an outbreak of Achromobacter xylosoxidans at a neonatal intensive care unit. We aimed to present clinical, laboratory and treatment data of the patients. Materials and METHODS: All consecutive episodes of bacteremia due to A. xylosoxidans at our neonatal intensive care unit, beginning with the index case detected at November 2009 until cessation of the outbreak in April 2010, were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: Thirty-four episodes of bacteremia occurred in 22 neonates during a 6-month period. Among the affected, 90% were preterm newborns with gestational age of 32 weeks or less and 60% had birth weight of 1000 g or less. Endotracheal intubation, intravenous catheter use, total parenteral nutrition and prolonged antibiotic therapy...

Cluster of Candida parapsilosis primary bloodstream infection in a neonatal intensive care unit BJID
Silva,Carmem Lúcia P. da; Santos,Rosana M. R. dos; Colombo,Arnaldo Lopes.
Candida parapsilosis is an increasingly important bloodstream pathogen in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). We investigated a cluster of bloodstream infections in a NICU to determine whether nosocomial transmission occurred. During a 3-day period, 3 premature infants hospitalized in the same unit presented with sepsis caused by C. parapsilosis. Electrophoretic karyotype of the organisms was performed by using pulsed field gel electrophoresis in a countour-clamped homogeneous electric field system. The isolate from 1 newborn could not be typed, and the isolates from the remaining 2 infants had identical patterns. All 3 cases are described. We conclude that nosocomial transmission of C. parapsilosis occurred and that neonates under intensive care may...

Decreased levels of pNR1 S897 protein in the cortex of neonatal Sprague Dawley rats with hypoxic-ischemic or NMDA-induced brain damage BJMBR
Hei,Ming-Yan; Tao,Hui-Kang; Tang,Qin; Yu,Bo; Zhao,Ling-Ling.
Our objective was to investigate the protein level of phosphorylated N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-1 at serine 897 (pNR1 S897) in both NMDA-induced brain damage and hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD), and to obtain further evidence that HIBD in the cortex is related to NMDA toxicity due to a change of the pNR1 S897 protein level. At postnatal day 7, male and female Sprague Dawley rats (13.12 ± 0.34 g) were randomly divided into normal control, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) cerebral microinjection, HIBD, and NMDA cerebral microinjection groups. Immunofluorescence and Western blot (N = 10 rats per group) were used to examine the protein level of pNR1 S897. Immunofluorescence showed that control and PBS groups exhibited significant neuronal...

Nosocomial outbreaks due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Uberlândia Federal University Hospital BJM
Brito,Denise Von Dolinger de; Oliveira,Elias Jose; Darini,Ana Lúcia da Costa; Abdallah,Vânia Olivetti Sttephen; Gontijo-Filho,Paulo Pinto.
The study documents the occurrence of two subsequent outbreaks in the NICU of HC-UFU, caused by epidemic strains of multiresistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, that occurred between March/01 and September and between October/01 and March/02, respectively. The P. aeruginosa outbreak included seven neonates with conjunctivitis and three with bacteremia. A case-control study was conducted for the A. baumannii outbreak, with 11 and 22 neonates, respectively. The isolates of A. baumannii were resistant to gentamacin and ciprofloxacin. P. aeruginosa isolates were resistant to ampicillin/sulbactam gentamicin and ciprofloxacin. The hands of healthcare workers and environmental cultures were negative. The outbreak of P. aeruginosa resulted in...
